Well, it's just one of those things that guys find attractive... It's like asking why do guys like lean girls, or girls with big... well, you get the idea.
And I think at least subconsciously guys know it can be hard to take care of... and that's another subconscious reason why guys find it attractive as well... a sign that a girl can take care of herself.

I think they're both great, it just depends on how the girl styles her hair. I happen to like my hai hr just below my shoulders; long enough for a variety of styles but still just short enough where it's perfect to manage. I do agree that from my experience guys like long hair better, probably because it's more feminine.
